September 2009 UPDATE:
Just come back from seeing the film, and wow...
It was certainly one of the most visually impressive films I've seen in years, and while the actual story was a bit simplistic, that's a small gripe against what was otherwise an excellent piece
I would love to see this movie be a trendsetter for studios greenlighting more mature animated films for a wider variety of audiences, but I wouldn't bet on it.
January 2009 DESCRIPTION:
My first introduction to these little guys was back in '06 when I finally saw Shane Acker's original short film 9.
I was instantly impressed with the creative character designs, as well as the mouse-eye view of a post-apocalyptic world.
When I heard that Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd, Big Fish) and Timur Bekmambetov (,i>Night Watch</i>, Wanted) would be producing a feature film based on the short with Shane Acker directing, I was understandably skeptical of whether the ideas from the original could be successfully expanded into a full-length film.
After having seen the trailer, though, it looks like it could be, at the very least, a visual spectacle.
As for this piece, it's me trying to expand my abilities with creating pieces from scratch. Creating a logo is obviously very different from actually creating a texture piece of art. I probably won't be messing around with this style much, but it was fun experimenting with it when I had some time to myself.
